GEONWOO LEE (b. 1992)

Geonwoo Lee has worked independently since 2017, beginning with wood sculpture and currently working primarily in painting. He uses discarded or overlooked subjects as his material, maintaining their imperfections and material qualities rather than erasing them, and brings them together into a single structure. In his early Kiwa series, he layered and arranged fragile end-grain pieces, prone to cracking and breaking, into a unified form. In the Baram series that followed, he arranged the amorphous forms marked on practice sheets scattered around his room in irregular configurations across the canvas. Although the materials and forms differ, the underlying attitude remains the same: imperfections are not erased but allowed to remain within the structure. Born in Seoul, the artist lives and works in Ilsan, South Korea.
